Birth Canal Blues hand-printed book

These are now being sent out. As these are hand-printed books created in the traditional way, some of the pages are still uncut at the top of the page.
Although it is very rare for me to put up this sort of request on Durtro, I know how kind and helpful those who read these email updates are, so I decided to mention that my close friend and collaborator Tod Wodicka, who is the author of the wonderful All Shall be Well, and All Shall Be Well, and All Manner of Things Shall Be Well and who has written an essay on my work for the catalogue for my forthcoming art exhibition, is urgently looking for an apartment in Berlin due to a sudden change in his circumstances. He wants to live by himself, not share. So if any of those who receive this email live in Berlin and know of somewhere that is available, please contact him at todwodicka at googlemail dot com.

Just a few brief, but for me very important, news items on this update.

Durtro Jnana and Coptic Cat

We have had some emails from people slightly confused about the recent developments with Durtro Jnana and Coptic Cat, so we wanted to clarify the situation.

Firstly, Durtro Jnana and United Jnana are STILL operating and will CONTINUE to operate. The greater part of previous Durtro Jnana and United Jnana catalogue is STILL in print and will REMAIN in print. And ALL C93 back catalogue and reissues will continue to be released on Durtro Jnana. And it may well be that in future more new artists and more new releases will come out on Durtro Jnana.

Both jnanarecords.com and durtro.com and the shops connected to their websites CONTINUE to operate.

COPTIC CAT has been set up to release NEW material, both musical and literary, by Current 93, Anok Pe Current 93, David Tibet and other artists chosen by David. It is essentially a new label which operates under the Durtro Jnana banner, and whose releases will ALSO be available from jnanarecords.com and durtro.com.

So, fundamentally, the only difference is is that all NEW material by David Tibet, C93 and all permutations thereof will be on the Coptic Cat label, a sub-division of Durtro Jnana! Until David changes his mind again.

We hope that clears up any questions.

David Tibet solo art exhibition at Isis Gallery, London

Some more details on this exhibition, which will be opening on November 29. We are presently working on the catalogue of the book, which will be published by Isis in association with Coptic Cat and which will, we hope, feature all the pieces in the exhibition. It also features an introduction by David, a foreword by Michel Faber and an afterword by Tod Wodicka. I am really honoured that Michel and Tod, two of my favourite writers, consented to write about my work and their responses to it. Bless you both and thanks.

The Isis website has been slightly updated with some more details of the exhibition. Go to: www.isisgallery.org/artists/david_tibet.html. There are also two other links which can be clicked on within the page which have more text about the exhibition and more of my artwork: here and here. We hope to send out the full update concerning the show in the next week or so.

Birth Canal Blues hand-printed edition At the moment of writing, all 20 copies of the artist’s edition with a drawing by David are sold out; there are 60 copies of the cream version left, and 35 copies of the crimson edition are left.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry: new album (briefly!) featuring David Tibet ‘Redemption’, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s new album on Narnack Records which is produced by Andrew W.K. features David very briefly on vocals on the track, ‘Baby Sucker’. I am honoured to be on this. ‘Scratch’ is the MAN!

Malleus: ‘The Hammer of God’

A beautiful book has been put out of artwork by a designer collective whose work I love, and with whom I have worked: MALLEUS! They designed the exquisite poster for the night that I and C93 curated at Roadburn earlier this year. Their 112 page book, which really and truly comes in colours, is called ‘The Hammer of God’ and features a small text by myself (on page 93) on why I love their work so much; it also reproduces the C93 poster as well as many others, including favourite bands of mine like Six Organs of Admittance, Om, Sunn O))) and Blue Cheer.

Jim Krewson is a genius and exhibiting in London in October

Matt Sweeney, now working with me and therefore in Current 93, as well as lots of other fantastic projects, introduced me to the art of Jim Krewson. Matt emailed me some time ago and said

David, I love Jim Krewson’s work. PLEASE pass along this invite to any of your freethinking pals. He’s a big inspiration. Also happens to be one of the best bluegrass singers I’ve ever heard. Spread the word, love MS.

I checked out Jim’s work and now I love it as much as Matt does.

He has an exhibition, entitled ‘Liebe für alle’ at Dicksmrs Gallery, 1-13 Adler Street, Unit 9, London E1 1EG. www.dicksmrs.com and her_indoors@dicksmrs.com and telephone +44 (0)7919 184289. Please take the time to see his work and I hope you love it as much as I do.

C93 Birth Canal Blues 12″ 3D cover

We forgot to put the cover image on the last update. Here it is!

Favourites of the moment

I have been listening a lot to the new album by Mark Fry, ‘Shooting the Moon’. Very touching and lovely and human. Many of you may know his underground classic ‘Dreaming with Alice’. If that moved you, so will this. www.markfry.co.uk and http://www.myspace.com/markfryartist

‘The Life and Death of Mr Badman’ by John Bunyan

My favourite Coptic text at the moment is ‘The Panegyric on Macarius of Tkow’, edited by DW Johnson, which I am re-reading. Any of you who are interested in this text can find it in two separate volumes, one of which has the Coptic text and one of which has the English translation (which can also be purchased separately). This volume (Vol. 416) has the English text, and this volume (Vol. 415) has the Coptic text.

Thanks and peace and happiness to you all. God is Love.

Dear all:

Apologies for the impersonal nature of our recent updates, which are due to my overwhelming busyness more than anything else.

I recently spent a couple of weeks in Cairo at the Congress of the International Association of Coptic Studies, and after the Congress spent a few days working in an archive of Coptic manuscripts on the “diplomatic edition” and translation of an apocryphal Christian Coptic text which discusses archangels. I hope that this will be published in an academic journal in due course, perhaps in 2009, as well as perhaps as a small edition published by Coptic Cat.

Beyond that, I have been working on the approval of the mixing for the new AnokPe C93 album, which will be released on December 1, as well as finishing the final pieces for my art exhibition in central London, which opens on November 29. There will be more details on the album and my art show, and the books, catalogue, prints, vinyl and CDs that are being released around it, on the next update which will follow very soon.

I wanted to mention some recent favourites of mine: the self-titled album by Blood Ceremony http://www.myspace.com/bloodceremony on Rise Above records http://www.riseaboverecords.com/ . I also love the new album by Diagonals http://www.myspace.com/diagonalband , also on Rise Above.

Thanks as always for all of your kindness and support.

Love, David+++

The long-awaited debut album from the ‘enfant terrible’ of the alternative music scene is finally here. OTHON’s album has an intimate and almost live quality. His compositions–a blend of opera, punk, noise and lyrical romanticism–form a proof of a rich and distinctive musical language.

3 tracks feature Marc Almond on vocals, including a cover of Aleister Crowley’s “The Tango Song”, the first time this song has ever been released; 1 track features Anok Pe Current 93’s David Tibet on vocals, covering Coil’s “The Dreamer is still Asleep”; and 4 tracks feature Ernesto Tomasini on vocals.

OTHON has enthused audiences and critics alike with his highly original compositions, intelligent songwriting and virtuosic piano playing. With only a limited self-made CD EP in his back catalogue, OTHON has toured several European cities and has his music performed regularly on both European and American radio shows. His pieces have formed soundscapes for films by Bruce LaBruce and Derek Jarman and he has collaborated with musicians such as Peter Christopherson, the Elysian Quartet (who guest on the album) and Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo.

CHRIS CONNELLY/FORGIVENESS AND EXILE

This is Chris Connelly’s ninth solo album, and the follow up to 2007’s critically acclaimed ‘THE EPISODES’.

‘FORGIVENESS AND EXILE’ is again produced by Tim Kinsella and Ben Vida with Chris, and the musicians are the same jazz and improvisational band that played on ‘THE EPISODES’. This time, however, the album is strongly augmented with the addition of four of Chris’s oldest friends:

DAVID MILLER (FINI TRIBE)

SHIRLEY MANSON (GARBAGE)

DAVID TIBET (CURRENT 93)

And actress TORRI HIGGINSON (THE ENGLISH PATIENT, STARGATE ATLANTIS)

The album, apart from the opening song ‘ARRAN’, is basically one long piece divided into sections; an ever changing and evolving meditation on war, displaced peoples, families shattered by corrupt governments, wrongful imprisonments and torture.

This impressionistic view is characterized through improvisation, dramatic change in dynamics, disparate imagery, ruined landscapes and cities illustrated by Connelly’s poetry.

The subject matter here is of course extremely dark, and it has not been taken in any way lightly by its author, and in an attempt to move towards easing the plight of the millions of innocent victims the world over, all monies generated by Chris Connelly for this project will go directly to the MARJORIE KOVLER CENTER FOR THE TREATMENT OF SURVIVORS OF TORTURE, providing medical, mental health, emergency and other support services to help torture survivors overcome trauma so that they may start a new life.

This expanded reissue contains the entire album as originally released on CD, as well as the alternate mix of ‘Chewing On Shadows’ that was used on the double vinyl LP edition, as well as a previously unreleased acoustic version of the same track.
Calling for Vanished Faces

This collection represents some of my favourite pieces by CurrentNinetyThree in the fifteen years since we were formed. I hope it may give some idea as to how our sound has evolved since 1984, though the themes in the work have remained the same for me since the beginning: apocalypse in the great and the small — the human and the universal; our loss of humanity and innocence; the centrality of Christ as the great mystery and the great question that must be answered; love, silence, sleep, and where dreams go to when they die. The line-up of the group has shifted constantly; however I wish to thank above all Steven Stapleton and Michael Cashmore, as none of this would truly exist without them.

On CD I, track 1 is from Dogs Blood Rising; track 2 is from Nature Unveiled; tracks 3 and 4 are from Imperium; tracks 5 and 7 are from Swastikas For Noddy; track 6 is from the single of the same name; track 8 is a previously unreleased track from the Thunder Perfect Mind sessions; track 9 is from Christ And The Pale Queens Mighty In Sorrow; track 10 is from Earth Covers Earth; track 11 is from Island; track 12, 13 and 14 are from Thunder Perfect Mind; track 15 is from All The Pretty Little Horses: TheInMostLight.

On CD II, track 1 is an excerpt from the EP The Starres Are Marching Sadly Home; tracks 2 and 4 are from the EP Lucifer Over London; track 3 is from the Tamlin single; track 5 is from the album by Michael Cashmore’s Nature And Organisation, Beauty Reaps The Blood Of Solitude; tracks 6, 7 and 14 are from Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre; tracks 8, 9 10 and 15 are from All The Pretty Little Horses: TheInmostLight; track 11 is from Soft Black Stars; track 12 is from the album by Steven Stapleton and David Tibet, Musical Pumpkin Cottage; track 13 is from the album by Nurse With Wound, Homotopy To Marie.

Following a near-death experience undergone by David Tibet, like a drowning man he heard all the music he had ever released as C93 being played simultaneously. After recovering, he and Steven Stapleton went into the studio and obsessively placed on tape everything C93 had recorded up to that point — from ‘LAShTAL’ up to ‘Faust’, including alternate mixes and compilation contributions, and then remixed it, to give an aural equivalent of what David heard.

After the death of David’s close friend, Jhonn Balance, he and Steven Stapleton worked on a requiem album to the memory of Jhonn, reworking and remixing Current 93’s 1985 album ‘In Menstrual Night’. It was one of Balance’s favourite C93 albums, and we felt it was a fitting farewell for him, master as he was of Moon Music.

The Venerable ‘Chi.Med Rig.’Dzin Lama, Rinpoche: Chimed Rigzin Rinpoche is the fourth incarnation of Nuden Dorje Drophan Lingpa Drolo Tsal, who was a great Terton or revealer of treasures. These are not wordly treasures but are spiritual texts and objects hidden in the eighth century by Padma Sambhava, the great Yogi who introduced Tantric Buddhism to Tibet.

Having received a full education in all aspects of Tibetan Buddhism he left his monastery, Khordong Gompa, at the age of eighteen, to fulfill the instructions of his root guru Tulku Tsorlo. Rinpoche went to India where he spent three and a half years in retreat at Tso Pema. He later taught for many years at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal.

Throughout his stay in India he continued his spiritual practice of daily meditation, ritual worship on the appropriate days and teaching whoever showed interest.

Chimed Rigdzin Rinpoche is a Tantric non-celibate Lama as is common in the Nyingma tradition to which he belongs. He is familiar with the problems of work and relationships which are so troublesome in modern times and is skilled in teaching Buddhist methods for dealing with them. he has worked with many western scholars and has translated many volumes of the ritual texts of his Byangter and Khordong lineages. In 1985, at the age of 64, he returned to Tibet after an absence of forty six years. He found his monastery in ruins after the Cultural Revolution. Though there was much interest from the local people in reviving the spiritual traditions of the area there are no texts for them to study. And so Rinpoche has set about reprinting all the lineage texts.

MURDERER

‘Invocation of Hallucinatory Mountain’: part 1 of the new trilogy by Anok Pe Current 93 on Coptic Cat

I am VERY delighted to announce that we have almost finished recording the material for part 1 of Anok Pe Current 93’s new HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAIN trilogy. I am listening to the rough mixes as I type this update.

Part 1 is entitled INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAIN, and is the precursor to part 2, ALEPH AT HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAIN (which is the album that has been available from the shop as a subscribers’ edition for some months.) INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAIN sets the scene and describes the birth of ALEPH.

INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAIN features seven new tracks, and the lineup which has recorded so far is: John Contreras, Baby Dee, Andria Degens, Andrew Liles, Alex Neilson, David Tibet and Keith Wood. We are also waiting for William Breeze, Ossian Brown, Matt Sweeney and Andrew W.K. to finish their work on the album. This will be one of the first releases on our new COPTIC CAT label (see below for more details).

We expect the album to be released as a digipak and vinyl album in mid-November. I can’t tell you how happy I, and all of us, are with this album. It is the first album by ANOK PE CURRENT 93 and it has captured exactly what I hoped it would. More details as to cost and exact release date as soon as we have them.

‘Invocation of Hallucinatory Mountain’ book/CD

Coptic Cat will also be releasing a beautiful hard-bound book of the 50 verses of David’s entire text of INVOCATION. 64 pages long and printed on a heavy, off-white paper with full colour endpapers featuring two new paintings by David of the Hallucinatory Mountains. Book-ribbon, blocked front and back cover and spine. Limited to 333 copies, this is the most exquisite book we have yet produced. Each copy will come with a CD of three or four demo versions of tracks from the album with Tibet’s guide vocals. This CD will NOT be available for purchase separately.

‘Invocation of Hallucinatory Mountain’ voice/electronics/drums version CD

David, Andrew Liles and Alex Neilson have also recorded a 20 minute version of the spoken text of the 50 stanzas of INVOCATION. This will be available as a mid-price CD in digipak. The piece is 20 minutes long and quite unlike anything C93 have done before.

Soon available from Durtro: official downloads of the entire Current 93 and Pantaleimon catalogues

We have hooked up with State 51/Greedbag — who are also responsible for Threshold House and Blast First’s online shops, amongst many others. They will be taking over the processing of orders in the Durtro online shop, though we wish to emphasise it is still Durtro who will post the items out. This shop becomes active on 1 September.

Our linking up with State 51/Greedbag will mean that all of the C93 and Pantaleimon back catalogue which is presently in the shop as physical items will be made available as MP3 and FLAC downloads. The most exciting part is that over the coming months the new Durtro Records shop will be making available, as digital downloads, many out-of-print items too. We also hope to add many live shows by C93 that we have performed from 1984 till the present.

Durtro Jnana says “Sleep!”. Coptic Cat says “Wake up!”

We have begun a new record label and book imprint, COPTIC CAT. This has also entailed our re-thinking of Durtro Jnana.

David, Mark and Andria, who run Durtro Jnana (DJ) between them, have thus made some difficult decisions as to the future of DJ.

Our workload has increased to the extent where we have decided that DJ must sleep for a very long time. We will release the CDs we have committed to release on DJ: albums by Chris Connelly, Othon Mataragas, Plinth and Vera Sazhina.

We will also keep the majority of DJ back catalogue in print, especially the material by Michael Cashmore, Current 93 and Pantaleimon, and DJ will continue being the label which reissues back catalogue by these artists.

However, all new material by Current 93 will be released on our new label, COPTIC CAT. COPTIC CAT will also release material by artists who are intimately connected to Anok Pe, David Tibet, Current 93 and all those whom we consider to be our family with the exception of Pantaleimon who will be moving in many other directions, whilst continuing to work with us all.

Durtro and Durtro Jnana have been going for so long that we have lost count of the number of years. Thank you for your support and kindness over those years.

Please note that this change ONLY applies to Durtro Jnana, NOT United Jnana, who will continue to release material by NWW.

Imminent and forthcoming releases on Coptic Cat

As we previously mentioned, there are many releases lined up for Coptic Cat in the remaining months of 2008. We just wish to mention again what is planned, although full details will follow when the item is in stock or just before it arrives.

Birth Canal Blues hand-printed book/live CD

This is a hand-printed book, made by Antonio Contiero, who produced Pantaleimon’s lovely Peeling Oranges Into Flowers book/CD a couple of years ago. It is the special edition of the BIRTH CANAL BLUES LIVE CD. The edition is of 200 copies, all of which have a colour frontispiece of a painting by David entitled Birth Canal Blue. 100 of which have a cream/off-white cover, and 100 of which have a scarlet cover. Durtro will have 75 copies only of each edition to sell.

Each copy comes with a CD of a live recording of C93′s performing their seminalBIRTH CANAL BLUES from one of the shows on their recent Tiny Tour of Europe. The line-up was: Bill Breeze, David Tibet, John Contreras, Baby Dee, Alex Neilson, Matt Sweeney, Andrew W.K., Keith Wood. More details and price when it is stock. I haven’t yet decided which recording I will use, though it will probably be Wroclaw. About 300 copies of this live CD will also be available as a simple jewel-case CD; see next entry below for details. We estimate this book/CD will cost somewhere in the region of £35/£40. More details when it is in stock.

Anok Pe Current 93 Birth Canal Blues studio/live 12″ vinyl

500 copies will be made of a 12″ vinyl on black vinyl with a 3D cover and free 3D printed viewing glasses. One side features the studio demo version of BIRTH CANAL BLUES previously released on CD, and the other side features a live version from the April 2008 tour, which will probably be taken from one of the shows at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre. More details and price when it is stock.

Bill Fay: The Coptic Cat Collection

I have been an obsessive admirer of Bill Fay since Jim O’Rourke introduced me to his work many years ago, and Michael Cashmore too reacted with an equivalent admiration to Bill’s work. We have since become good friends with Bill, and are delighted to announce that Coptic Cat will be releasing a 3CD set titled, at Bill’s request, ‘THE COPTIC CAT COLLECTION’. We expect this to come out as a 6-panel digipak — similar to C93′s ‘The Inmost Light’ trilogy, and the large booklet contains an extensive essay written by Bill especially for this release, lyrics and photographs. This 3CD set includes the following CDs:

THE COMPLETE DERAM RECORDINGS 1967 - 1971 All the material Bill released with Decca/Deram: ‘Bill Fay’, ‘Time of the Last Persecution’, and his sole single, ‘Some Good Advice’/'Screams in the Ears’. 80 minutes long.

PIANO, GUITAR, BASS AND DRUMS 1970 - 1971 demo and live material from 1970 and 1971. 52 minutes long.

STILL SOME LIGHT: HOME-RECORDED ALBUM 2008 Bill’s new album, recorded at hime. 37 minutes long.

PLEASE NOTE: BILL FAY AND COPTIC CAT will be giving ALL their profits from this album to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières. As many of you know, the benefit album that Durtro Jnana did for DWB/MSF, NOT ALONE, has to date raised approximately UK £17,200 / €21.800 / US $32,000 for the charity.

Brother Focus: Songs for Kenneth Anger

David and Bill Breeze are still working on this double CD album. More details as and when we have them.

Don Bradshaw-Leather: Distance Between Us

We are still planning to release this album but it is taking longer than we had hoped due to some of the Bradshaw-Leather family moving home. More details as and when.

Under the Rain and Teeth of Gods: David Tibet’s lyric book

Despite my hope (and promise!) that this would be out in November 2008, and despite the fact that David is working on it with 3 friends (Ayse Tuzlak, José Pacheco and Nidge Ince), David’s workload means that he has again had to shift its publication date forward to David’s birthday on 5 March, 2009. Once again, apologies. Of course we are still delighted to offer refunds to anyone who desires one. It will be worth the wait, we hope. Thanks for your patience.

Count Stenbock: The Collected Works

Another Coptic Cat publication I am working on brings together all the material Durtro Press published by Stenbock, as well as two other previously unpublished stories, ‘Tristan and Isolde’, a tragedy, and an incomplete and unfinished lost-race story, ‘The Introduction and Narrative of Sosthene’. The Durtro editions have been sold out for many years and are often prohibitively expensive if bought from dealers.

The book will include a new introduction by myself. At one stage I had intended to write a short biography of the Count, including much new information, as well as letters and other writings of his, such as his French language play, ‘La Tentation de Saint Antoine’, and other fragments, including some dramatic scenes in German, but I no longer have the time due to my endless Coptic studies, which have removed any spare hours I had which were not spent on recording, writing and painting which, once upon a time, I could have spent working on Stenbock.

It is 12 years since Durtro Press published our first Stenbock volume, Studies of Death, and I truly hope that someone will come along who will publish a definitive study of the life and writings of this great and misunderstood artist, but it is likely that this volume will be my last publication on or by the Count, unless something truly extraordinary turns up.

What the volume will contain, then, is as follows:

COLLECTED POEMS: His three volumes, Love, Sleep and Dreams; Myrtle, Rue and Cypress; The Shadow of Death.

COLLECTED PROSE:

STUDIES OF DEATH: Hylas, Narcissus, The Death of a Vocation, Viol d’Amor, The Egg of the Albatross, The True Story of a Vampire, The Worm of Luck.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO PERIODICALS: The Other Side

TRANSLATIONS FROM BALZAC: Christ in Flanders, A Passion in the Desert.

POSTHUMOUSLY PUBLISHED PROSE: The Child of the Soul, La Girandola, A Modern St. Venantius, The Story of a Scapular, The Myth of Punch, Faust, A Secret Kept, La Mazurka des Revenants, The King’s Bastard, Tristan and Isolde, The Introduction and Narrative of Sosthene.

INTRODUCTION BY MYSELF

We are still unsure as to whether to make this volume a paperback or hardback. Perhaps we will do both. I am hoping to include images of the front covers of all of his first editions in the volume, as well as facsimiles of his written dedications and letters.

Nick Blinko: The Haunted Head

By the time you read this, I will have met Nick Blinko and his representative Henry Boxer to go through the original pieces of his artwork to choose those we will be putting in the limited edition of his Coptic Cat novel. Nick’s novel is imminent in its beautiful, strange and eloquent beauty!

David Tibet’s artwork featured in the ‘Eloquent Obsessions’ art exhibition, London

David Tibet on front page of Leipziger Volkszeitung

I recently attended the 2nd International Summer School of Coptic Papyrology in the beautiful city of Leipzig. There were various groups, working on an early version of the Gospel of Mark as well as documentary letters. In the group I was in I, and other students, were working under Professor Stephen Emmel on a previously unpublished vellum codex of the Martyrdom of the Coptic Saint Apa Prau. The local paper came in to do a small feature and took a photo of me examining one of the leaves. I look remarkably like ET, one of the students remarked, which I put down to the high-powered magnifying visor I was wearing, and the angle of the photograph, and not down to my genes. For those wanting to see a scan of myself manifesting as a papyrological ET, go here.

The caption underneath can be translated as follows:

What could be meant by this? In the library of the University of Leipzig, the English researcher David Tibet tries to decipher fragments of text about the Egyptian saint Apa Prau. His most important work tools are his magnifying glasses, whether on his head or in his hand. He is one of twenty academics from all over the world who are in Leipzig learning to read the contents of old papri. The week-long course was organised by the library and the Egyptian Institute.

HOCKLEY, Frederick (Transcriber) Edited by Dietrich Bergman. A Complete Book of Magic Science Containing the method of constraining and exorcising spirits to appearance, the consecration of Magic Circles, and The Form of a Bond of Spirits Transcribed From An Ancient Manuscript Grimoire. Teitan Press, 2008. Hardcover. Small 8vo. 136pp. Bound in high quality black cloth, with a gilt sigil stamped on the front cover, and gilt title etc. on the spine. Numerous black and white reproductions of sigils, Hebrew letters, etc. in the text. Color frontispiece and a 16 page color insert reproducing the original colored illustrations of sigils, seals, magical tools, etc. The frontispiece and color insert are printed on special coated paper stock, allowing for better quality reproduction than on normal uncoated paper. Limited to 450 numbered copies. Until this printing, the grimoire has existed only in manuscript form apparently derived from “an ancient Latin manuscript,” said to date from 1519. The work is clearly related to the book known as ‘The Secret Grimoire of Turiel,’ although it is lengthier and contains much additional material. One of Hockley’s manuscript copies, complete with beautiful color drawings of the sigils, magical circles etc., was recently discovered, and it is from this Hockley manuscript, that the Teitan Press edition has been prepared. This First Edition of the ‘Complete Book of Magic Science’ faithfully reproduces the text and diagrams of Hockley’s manuscript. It is prefaced with an Introduction by Dietrich Bergman, who has also carefully analyzed the text in comparison to that of ‘The Secret Grimoire of Turiel,’ and annotated it accordingly. $50.00
PARSONS, John W. [ Jack Parsons ] Edited and with a Foreword by Hymenaeus Beta. Three Essays on Freedom. Teitan Press, 2008. Hardcover. Octavo. 88pp. bound in high quality black cloth, with silver gilt title etc. to the spine, and striking black and white dustjacket featuring a seldom seen photograph of Parsons on the front. Black and white frontispiece portrait photograph of Parsons. Limited to 418 numbered copies. In addition to being a loyal devotee of Crowley’s creed of Thelema, Jack Parsons was a staunch libertarian who vehemently opposed racism, the suppression of women, religious intolerance, sexual repression and anything else that diminished the rights of the individual. This book comprises three essays by Parsons: the never-before published “Freedom is a Lonely Star,” his better known work “Freedom is a Two-Edged Sword” (previously published only in softcover) and a short piece entitled “Doing Your Will” (previously published only in a limited-circulation journal). Three Essays on Freedom not only delivers a blistering attack on authoritarianism, but also offers a well thought out vision of a society in which each was free “to do his or her will,” in accordance with the higher ideals of Crowley’s Thelema. $45.00

Favourite books and musics of the moment

JOSHUA BEN JOSEPH: One of my favourite recently-discovered, at least by me, artists at the moment is Joshua Ben Joseph:www.myspace.com/joshuabenjoseph. I love his work, and recommend you check out his work on his MySpace. This is a great and powerful artist; I am really excited by his truth.

HUSH ARBORS forthcoming album — released 21 October on Ecstatic Peace — is BEYOND perfect and is on super-heavy rotation at the Tibet/Degens household, as is the new OM 7″ on Sub-Pop. I am also listening to Oum Kalthoum a lot, and of course Judas Priest.

I have also been listening a lot to PANTALEIMON’s last two releases. The remix album of her songs, with beautiful and completely unpredictable re-visionings by people like Andrew WK, Fabrizio Palumbo, Stephen O’Malley, CarterTutti, Fovea Hex and so on is truly stunning. I know I am biased, and why shouldn’t I be. But to be honest, I think that her new EP, TALL TREES, is her finest and most haunting work to date. This is available at www.abatonbookcompany.com

My favourite newly-discovered writer at the moment, outside the world of Coptic, is Brett Easton Ellis. I absolutely love this writer! I had read his American Psycho many years ago, but had not read anything else until recommended to by Tartarus Press’s Ray Russell.

But the book I have most loved reading recently is Michel Faber’s The Fire Gospel. It isn’t published until November but Michel kindly sent me a copy, and this book is a remarkable accomplishment. I can’t say how much it touched me — it is funny, pitiless, compassionate and really quite terrifying.

Thanks and peace and love to you all,

Thank you for listening and coming. A general update on our activities follows.

Work is progressing smoothly on David’s lyric book ‘Under the Rain and Teeth of Gods’, with the kind assistance of Ayse Tuzlak, José Pacheco and Nigel Ince. We are still hoping to publish it in November 2008.

It is now probable that the ‘Aleph on Hallucinatory Mountain’ album will now be released on David’s 49th birthday on 5 March, 2009, and there will be accompanying concerts in the USA, England and Europe.

Before the release of the album, there will be a series of releases building up to the album, including two books — one hand-printed, the other a hardback — with both having (different) accompanying CDs, as well as a full-length album which introduces the themes of ‘Aleph on Hallucinatory Mountain’. More news of these items when they are in stock.

It seems that David’s solo art show will now be held in December 2008 at the Isis Gallery in central London.

We are also working on the ‘Collected Works of Count Stenbock’; this will include ALL the material written by Count Stenbock which has been published up till now by Durtro Press, as well as a couple of pieces which have never been published anywhere at all. At the moment I think we will be publishing it in both hardback and paperback formats.

The Nick Blinko book, which is titled ‘The Haunted Head’, has been proofed, and will be going into print shortly. We are still undecided as to whether it will be released in paperback as well as hardback. Presently we plan a limited edition hardback, each copy of which will be signed by Nick and which will also have an original drawing by Nick. It seems that there will also be a 1-track CD with a newly recorded song by Rudimentary Peni created especially for the book. People who don’t know of Nick’s art can find information here, here and here. His work is on show in some of the world’s leading collections of art brut and outsider art.

The new Nurse With Wound album, “Huffin” Rag Blues” released

The new album, their first for over four years, ‘Huffin’ Rag Blues’ is the inevitable conclusion of Steven Stapleton and Andrew Liles’ passion for easy listening and lounge jazz. Contorted and carved into a distinctly Nurse With Wound sound ‘Huffin’ Rag Blues’ is a greasy amalgam of uneasy listening, shaken and stirred Molotov cocktails and quixotica. Full to the brim with squeals, screams, smokey vocals, drunken double basses, melting vibraphones and internal organs from outer space this album is an unlikely and unique excursion from beginning to end. As with all Nurse With Wound recordings it goes without saying… expect the unexpected.
Favourite albums and books of the moment

Without any doubt, my favourite album of the year so far is Judas Priest’s new 2CD set ‘Nostradamus’. I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful this is, and how jealous and bitter I am that I didn’t create this album myself.

I play it constantly. I have gone back to all my Judas Priest albums with absolute obeisance; I had really recently concentrated on my early favourites, ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’ and ‘Sin after Sin’, before hearing ‘Nostradamus’, but now I have returned with renewed Coptic Force ‘n’ Juice to all their works. Blissful.

I also want to say how much I love the new album by Lynn Jackson, ‘Soft Stars’ — absolutely my favourite work by her so far. Very touching, very beautiful, very pure and very true. You can hear her work here www.myspace.com/lynnjackson and buy the CD at www.bustedflatrecords.com.

And, very belatedly, I have started reading the works of Michel Houellebecq, starting with Atomised’. If you haven’t read this — and I am sure many of you discovered this author long before I did — I urge you to do so. One of the bleakest, funniest, most terrifyingly accurate and unsentimental books I have ever read. I would have to put it down after every couple of pages, as I was so overwhelmed with its beauty and power.

So, overawed by my inadequacy in the face of Judas Priest and Michel Houllebecq, I return to my Cartoon Apocalypses.

love to you all, Anok Pe David Tibet+++

Pantaleimon play free afternoon concert in London, 31 May 2008

Pantaleimon remixed and realised: ‘Heart of the Sun’

June will see the release of ‘Heart of the Sun’, the CD of remixes and re-imaginings of the ‘Mercy Oceans’ album.

“The whole project came about when Clodagh Simonds of Fovea Hex asked me if she could remix ‘Under the Water’. Of course I said, “yes!” When she came back with such remarkable music and casually mentioned, “Why don’t you ask a couple of other friends to do remixes?” it gave me the idea for this album.

“It is not simply a remix album, but a collaborative project. I chose friends whom I also admired as artists and who inhabit a creative space that are connected in some way and on some level to me as well as to each other.

“I let my babies go out to play with Andrew W.K., Stephen O’Malley, Lilium, CarterTutti, Colin Potter, Andrew Liles, The Bricoleur, Plinth, Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo (Larsen) and, of course, Fovea Hex. Even though I had an inkling that the mixes would fit together as one coherent whole, I had no idea just how much they would complement one another.

“There are also some previously unreleased tracks, including a cover of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s ‘Even if Love’, which didn’t quite make it on ‘Mercy Oceans’ for aural reasons. However, this cover version has now been gently manipulated and star-mangled by Susan Stenger (Band of Susans).

“Another of the unreleased tracks is my first collaboration with the group Strings of Consciousness. They wished to remix one of the songs from ‘Mercy Oceans’; however I had no more songs remaining from the album, so we created a new song together for this record.”

‘Heart of the Sun’ will be released on Durtro Jnana, and will be available through the Durtro and Jnana online shops as soon as we have copies. All the tracks were especially created for this project, and they are called ‘The Warming’, ‘Dance of the Honey Bees’, ‘Sing Night Swallow’ and ‘Tall Trees’. At the moment we believe ‘Tall Trees’ will be released in the next couple of months. We will send out an update as soon as we know the exact release date.

The.Bricoleur, collaborator with Current 93 and Pantaleimon releases a super-limited CD

‘The Falling Sickness’ is a diviner’s toolbox comprising 9 CDR singles — and by singles I mean singles, one track only, potentially ranging from 4 - 60 minutes. Each single in the toolbox will be sold separately (limited to 25) and housed in a distinct hand and mind made fascination created by Lauren Winton: www.myspace.com/laurenwinton

‘Holy Insecurity’ takes its name from the Jewish mystic, Martin Buber, who spoke of the ‘holy insecurity’ as the most creative state — bordering on madness. In ‘Der heilige Weg’ he rages against the predictable status quo: “O you secure and safe ones, you who hide yourselves behind the ramparts of the law so that you will not have to look into God’s abyss! Yes, you have secure ground under your feet, while we hang suspended looking over the endless deeps. But we would not change our dizzy insecurity and poverty for your security and abundance”.

Running time is 10:51 minutes. To hear an excerpt go www.myspace.com/lebricoleur

Available to purchase on the 25 May from www.myspace.com/lebricoleur. £5 including postage.

Peace (for Mom): a 2CD compilation from Brainwashed

Following the death of Brainwashed founder Jon Whitney’s mother, he has put together a compilation album, from which all proceeds will go to Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art: www.picturebookart.org. This beautiful 2CD features many wonderful artists and wonderful songs too. Go here for more details and go here to buy the CD: http://brainwashed.com/commerce.html

Jon Whitney writes:

“Amongst many things, I owe both my music enthusiasm and my willingness to share to my mother and losing her last year was a complete shock. She brought me to my first concerts and was in the balcony at my first festival in 2006. ‘Peace’ is a collection I assembled in memory of her but in tribute to a number of close friends who all lost their mothers before their time. It contains some songs which were recorded exclusively, some which were various outtakes, and some which perfectly represent emotions felt by myself, other family, friends, and in some cases, my mom. All of the contributions came from true friends. All proceeds will be donated to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass, a place where my mom volunteered for the last few years. She was an elementary and kindergarten teacher nearly my entire life so early childhood literacy meant a lot to her.”

Firstly, I and all everyone would like to thank those who made our small tour possible—those who arranged it, those who booked it and, most of all, those who came. We had a tremendous and exhausting time. Especially we would like to thank Fabrizio Palumbo, Giulio Di Mauro and Enrico Croci for organising it and Patrik and Pepper for driving us everywhere. And thank also to: in Poland Maieck and Anna; in Moscow Grigory, Inna, Gerry, Father Kosma, Anjey, Elena and Cyril—and Vera Sazhina for playing with us—and also what a pleasure it was to meet Aljona, Ksenia and Ekaterina; in Turin Davide; in Berlin Christoph and Anke; in Bourges Christophe; in Tilburg Walter and Jurgen; and in London Danni and Glen. Also to Lauren Winton for the film that was shown at the London show. And thanks too to Nidge, Pacheco and Olivier for coming to so many of the concerts. I also want to especially thank Michael Cashmore, Steffi Thiel and their wonderful daughter Unity for coming to be with us in London and for playing with Marc Almond there; to Marc Almond; to Antony; and to Sebastian Horsley; and to Bill Fay for coming to the show too. And everyone else.

Apologies for delays in sending out material

Sorry that is has taken so long to send out some material. There is only one person who takes care of all of Durtro’s mail order/email business so things can get a little overwhelming at times. We are steadily getting through the email backlog. All copies of the Marc Almond/Michael Cashmore CD and the ‘Black Ships Heat the Dancefloor’ CD/DVD are being sent out from our office in Canada for logistical reasons, so these items may take a little longer to arrive with you.

Current 93 tour

Firstly: the Current 93 tour is STILL ON, and NO dates have been cancelled!

As many of you will have seen, Rickie Lee Jones has been unable to appear at the C93 shows. Both I and Rickie Lee want to point out this happened due to bad luck and unforeseen problems. We remain good friends and, although sadly this time the energy was against us, we are both determined to reschedule our working together as soon as we can.

The dates that C93 are playing are below. This will be the last C93 tour of Europe for some time.

Current 93: April 2008 European shows with Æthenor, Baby Dee, Hush Arbors and Skitliv

Current 93 are delighted to announce a small series of European shows in a build-up to the release of their new album ‘Anok Pe: Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain’. Also appearing with Current 93 will be some of the artists I love the most, and whose presence on our short outing honours me greatly. The second night of the show in Moscow and the first night in Berlin—those of 12 and 13 April, respectively, will feature Current 93 performing material from their early Birth-Canal Blues albums, NATURE UNVEILED and DOGS BLOOD RISING.

Note: please contact the individual venues for ticket sales
