Two new favourite books
Clare Wigfall, The Loudest Sound and Nothing (Faber)
Clare’s first book is a collection of short stories that are as dark, funny, illuminating, confusing as any others I have read, and which all shine as jewels and stars. I have found this book to be continually fascinating and moving, and I recommend it with extreme prejudice to everyone who reads this list. I was introduced to Clare and her work by my friend Tod Wodicka, and both Baby Dee and myself have been taking Clare’s evocative and haunting book everywhere with us. A remarkable author and a remarkable woman. www.myspace.com/clarewigfall

Sebastian Horsley, Dandy in the Underworld (Sceptre UK and next year, Harper Perennial USA)
The squalid and redemptory autobiography of one of my oldest and closest friends. I was at school with Sebastian, and have known him for 31 years. His life has been very remarkable and almost equally terrifying: so if you are faint hearted, avoid this tale of heroin, alcohol and crack addiction, encounters with over a thousand prostitutes, being crucified in the Philippines as an art statement, painting sharks whilst in a cage, and many other adventures, all whilst creating some of the most beautiful paintings I have seen.

Peace and Love to all,
